OP-XY Drum Utility

The OP-XY Drum Utility is a small, browser-based tool I built to make creating drum kits for the Teenage Engineering OP-XY faster and less frustrating.

When I started using the OP-XY, I missed the dedicated drum utilities that existed for older Teenage Engineering devices like the OP-1 and OP-Z. On the OP-XY, building a drum kit directly on the device works, but itโ€™s slow and unintuitive if youโ€™re working with a lot of samples. I wanted a simple way to drop in sounds, tweak them quickly, and export a ready-to-use kit.

This project is my attempt to recreate that classic drum-utility workflow in a modern, lightweight way.

What It Is

The OP-XY Drum Utility is a drag-and-drop web app that lets you assemble a full drum kit and export it as an OP-XY .preset file.

You get 24 sample slots matching the OP-XYโ€™s drum layout, with per-sample controls for trimming, bit depth, sample rate, and reverse. Once everything is set, the tool packages the kit so it can be copied directly onto the device and loaded without additional conversion.

How It Works

Everything runs entirely in the browser using the Web Audio API. All processing happens client-side, so your audio files never leave your computer.

The goal wasnโ€™t to replace a DAW or a full sample editor โ€” it was to create a focused utility that does one job well and stays out of the way.

Why I Made It

I built this tool because I wanted a faster, more enjoyable way to prepare drum kits for my own OP-XY. Instead of manually loading and editing samples one by one, I wanted a workflow that felt immediate and intentional.

This project reflects how I like to work: small tools, clear purpose, minimal friction.
